The new Purple cultivar was developed by the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya (TRFK)  and thereafter planted commercially by small-scale Kenyan farmers. Purple Leaf Tea is a cultivar of Camellia Sinensis (species) Assamica (varietal). It is called Purple Tea because the bushes grow purple leaves in Kenyan tea gardens. The leaves are purple because they contain super-antioxidants called anthocyanins.

Heath Benefits of Purple tea
