The new Purple cultivar was developed by the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya (TRFK)  and thereafter planted commercially by small-scale Kenyan farmers. Purple Leaf Tea is a cultivar of Camellia Sinensis (species) Assamica (varietal). It is called Purple Tea because the bushes grow purple leaves in Kenyan tea gardens. Purple Tea leaves have more antioxidants and low caffeine levels compared to any other type of tea leaf. They contain an antioxidant called Anthocyanin, which makes the tea leaves turn purple.
